No Motivation to Work out?

When it’s been a prolonged period of time between work outs, it can be hard to build up enough will power to turn those great thoughts into reality. I like to ride for fitness and if I’ve had a long stint off the bike I don’t seem to love it as much. I feel really unfit and it’s just not as fun!

For me, I need to trick my brain into realising that it’s not such a bad thing after all. To do this, I recommend starting with really small goals that are so easy to achieve, it’s almost not worth doing the exercise. For me, it might be starting with a 10km ride that takes 20 minutes. This way I know I can do it without the dreaded burning lungs and sore legs. After working my way up slowly, I start to enjoy the exercise again, and actually want to start challenging myself with some tougher rides.

Another great way to get motivated and stay motivated is to give yourself small achievable goals over a defined time period. If you need to achieve a certain amount of fitness or strength to be able to unlock the next phase of your program, it makes things a lot easier!

Bring a friend along! If you tell someone that you will meet them at the gym tomorrow at 5am you have already conditioned your brain to make that happen. If you wake up feeling tired. It doesn’t seem to matter as much as letting your friend down.

Lastly, look at the exercise as fun games! The brain is a powerful organ and can change our lives for good or bad just by a shift in mental state. If you think you’re having fun, you’ll eventually believe it.
